Alternative indie band Silversun Pickups celebrate the 16 year anniversary of their debut studio album “Carnavas”, released July 25, 2006. To understand their journey in a world where so many great musicians fly underneath the radar due to mainstream commercial acts, Silversun Pickups went out and carved their own trail impossible to be ignored.
The band composed of Brian Aubert (Vocalist + Guitars) Christopher Guanlao (Drums), Joe Lester (Keyboards) and Nikki Monninger (Bassist + Back-Up Vocals), began their careers as friends who played in bands together or were in the bands of mutual friends when it all got started in the Los Angeles, Silver Lake music scene most notably at Silverlake Lounge. After a series of gigs, the band started building a loyal following which caught the attention of Dangerbird Records, resulting in the release of their 2005 debut EP titled ‘Pikul’.
With the success of the PIKUL EP and live cult classics “Kissing Families” and “…All the Go Inbetweens.”, the band cemented their love from fans and went on tour, returning to create their debut album Carnavas, July 25, 2006. The 11 track album produced by Dave Cooley (J Dilla, Rolling Blackouts) and engineered by Tom Biller, showcased the band in full bloom with a combination of dark/light themed songs, namely “Melatonin” , “Future Foe Scenarios” “Well Thought Out Twinkles” and “Rusted Wheel” to name a few, all playing their part in what made this album a memorable classic.
Silversun Pickups – Lazy Eye [Music Video]
I remember the first time I heard Silversun Pickups, the song playing was “Rusted Wheel” and I was completely blown away by the soundscapes of the song and arrangement of the composition, based on drums, riffs, bridge and not forgetting the amazing bass by Nikki . I knew at that moment, I needed to hear more of their music and after I knew their name, I was soon onto Carnavas. The album from start to finish was very well rounded and for me definiteley one of those ‘insert disc and just press play kinda albums. This ofcourse was my introduction to the band and as they say the rest is history.
The success of Carnavas resulted in album songs “Rusted Wheel” being used in the film “Puncture” end credits and in surf culture films. “Well Thought Out Twinkles” and “Melatonin” featured in the “Tony Hawks Proving Gound” video game as well as being downloadable for video games Rock Band 1& 2. The single “Lazy Eye” received lots of airplay on various music TV stations that included MTV, MTV2, MTVU, VH1, Fuse and Much Music, along with numerous TV performances that included the likes of “The Late Show with David Letterman”, “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” and Last Call with Carson Daly”.
